Whiskey Cocktails: The Blood and Sand Cocktail on mymansbelly.com

At some point in your life, you’ve no doubt tasted Scotch Whiskey (aka Scotch).  My guess is that the first time you tasted it, was not unlike the first time you had sex.  You were able to now say that you “did it,” but it wasn’t necessarily something you enjoyed and were left trying to figure out what people see in the act that makes them talk about it so highly.

After you do drink it again, you begin to experience some of the nuances and get your bearings about you.  As you grow older, and more experienced, you have your favoritepositions preparations to more thoroughly enjoy your sex whiskey – neat or on ice.  But did you ever consider that scotch also makes for some pretty terrific whiskey cocktails?  I’m not talking about doing this with your 18 Year Macallan…that would be treasonous.

Believe it or not, whiskey drink recipes are totally drinkable during the summer months.  Okay, maybe not all of them…but there are quite a few that don’t have those heavy fall and winter overtones of spice and the ability to offer you warmth from the inside.  Take the blood and sand cocktail.  I mean, it’s got “sand” in the name…how could it not be appropriate summertime drinking.  Yeah, it’s got “blood” in the name too, but rest assured it wasn’t named for some booze induced bloody beach brawl that happened on Venice Beach.  Nope, the blood and sand cocktail gets its name from the 1920′s movie “Blood and Sand,” starring Rudolph Valentino.

As far as whiskey cocktails go, the traditional recipe for this is surprisingly sweet.  It’s also one of those easy to remember cocktail recipes because it’s an equal parts recipe.  That means that all of the ingredients, contained in the drink, are used in the exact same proportions to one another – so even if you’re dripping drunk, you can’t screw up this recipe (not that I condone that type of behavior).

Even though this cocktail tends to be on the sweeter side, you can always change it up a bit.  Whiskey drink recipes, I’ve found, are the perfect drink recipes to play with a bit.  If you want things to be less fruity, just bump up the proportion of the whiskey (while leaving the other ingredients alone).  Something else that’s pretty cool about the blood and sand cocktail is that you could also make this with other types of whiskey.  Since I didn’t feel like using Scotch, I used Wild Turkey rye whiskey instead.

So don’t be afraid to mix up your summertime drink repertoire (get out of your rut) and break out the whiskey for some whiskey drink recipes that are sure to surprise your friends with their refreshing flavors.

Recipe: Blood and Sand Cocktail

  • 3/4 Ounce Scotch Whisky
  • 3/4 Ounce Cherry Heering
  • 3/4 Ounce Sweet Vermouth
  • 3/4 Ounce Orange Juice (preferably fresh squeezed)

  1. Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice.
  2. Shake and strain into a cocktail glass.
  3. Garnish with an orange peel and maybe some good maraschino cherries.

Quick notes

You can double up the measurement of the whiskey if you want a less sweet drink. If you can’t find Cherry Heering, you can substitute cherry brandy. DO NOT USE KIRSCH.

I used rye whiskey, instead of scotch whiskey in mine.
